Drain Cleaning Services for Clogged and Backed-Up Drains

Request an estimate for your drain

A drain clog starts small. The sink gets slow, the tub gurgles, and then one day water will not go down at all. Regardedhusband Plumbing is a referral service. We explain what you can safely try yourself, then connect you with independent providers in our network who do the actual drain work.

Most clogs come from grease, hair, paper or buildup inside older pipes. Some are close to the drain and easy to clear. Others sit deep in the main line and need a cable machine or a water jet. This page walks you through the first steps, the tools providers use, and typical U.S. price ranges, so you know what to ask and what a fair written quote should include before anyone starts work.

Slow or Backed-Up Drain? Start Here

A gurgling sink is a nuisance. A drain that pushes water back into your house is urgent. This page helps you tell the two apart, even if you have never faced a clog before.

Stop the Water First

Shutoff first. Stop running the sinks, the washer and the dishwasher. Every gallon you send into a blocked line has to go somewhere, and that somewhere may be your floor. If water is rising, grab towels, mop it up and move rugs and boxes out of the way.

Safe Things to Try Yourself

A simple clog often gives up to basic tools. Use a flat-bottom plunger on sinks and tubs, and a flange plunger on toilets. Seal the rim, then push and pull in steady strokes for about a minute. In a bathroom sink, pull the stopper and wipe out the hair and gunk with a gloved hand. Under a kitchen sink, set a bucket down, unscrew the trap, rinse it out and screw it back on. A small hand auger from the hardware store can reach a few feet past the trap. Go gently. Forcing the cable can scratch a pipe or snag it.

One Drain or the Whole House?

Run water in a different fixture. If only one sink is slow, the clog is probably in that fixture's own branch line. You have a decent shot at fixing that yourself. If the tub gurgles when you flush, or several drains slow down together, the blockage is likely farther along the main line. Another clue: water bubbles up in the drain closest to the floor, like a shower or floor drain, when the washer runs. That points to the main.

When to Put the Plunger Down

Stop and ask a provider for help if any of these fit:

  • More than one drain is backing up
  • Dark water or a sewage smell comes up through a drain
  • The clog returns within days of clearing it
  • You plunged hard and nothing moved
  • You cannot find or reach the cleanout

Request a callback to check provider availability. Many providers can respond quickly to an active backup, though hours vary by provider.

What Usually Clogs a Drain

Most clogs are boring. In kitchens, it is grease, coffee grounds and food scraps that cool into a hard paste. In bathrooms, it is hair tangled with soap scum. Toilets choke on too much paper or on wipes, even ones sold as flushable. Laundry lines gather lint. Older bungalows and many tract homes from the 1950s to the 1980s add another problem: aging pipes with rough insides that catch debris, and roots that slip into tiny joints, especially after a long dry season when roots go looking for water. A heavy winter rain can then push a weak line over the edge.

How Providers Clear a Blocked Pipe

Emergency drain clearing starts with finding where the clog sits. Then the provider picks a tool.

Cable Machines

A motorized drain snake spins a steel cable through the line to break up or hook the blockage. It suits hair, paper and most household clogs.

Hydro-Jetting

A jetter blasts high-pressure water to scour grease and scale off the pipe walls. It costs more, but it cleans the whole pipe instead of poking one hole through it.

Camera Inspection

For repeat clogs, a provider may feed a small camera down the line. You can watch the screen and see the cause. Ask to see the footage.

Skip the Chemical Bottle

It is tempting. Don't. Caustic cleaners can sit in standing water and soften older or thin pipes. They can burn skin and eyes, and mixing products can release dangerous fumes. Worse, the provider then has to work through that liquid. If you already poured some in, tell the provider and do not plunge, because splashback can hurt.

What Sets the Price

Four things move the number: how deep the clog sits, which tool the job needs, how easy the line is to reach, and when the visit happens. A cleanout makes access simple. Without one, a provider may have to pull a toilet. After-hours visits often cost extra. Quote in writing, with the scope and any added fees listed, before work starts. Ask whether the quote covers a return visit if the clog comes back. The cost table below shows typical U.S. ranges.

Keeping Drains Clear

Small habits beat big repairs.

  • Wipe pans into the trash, not the sink
  • Put a hair catcher in every shower and tub
  • Run hot tap water for half a minute after dishes
  • Flush only toilet paper
  • Keep tree and shrub roots in mind when you plant near sewer lines

Know Your Valve and Your Cleanout

Know your valve. Find your main water shutoff, and find the cleanout, a capped pipe near the house, garage or yard. Label both with tape. A provider saves time when you can point right to them.

Questions to Ask Before You Hire

  • Is this a flat price or an hourly rate?
  • Does the quote include a camera look if needed?
  • What happens if the clog comes back?
  • Are any after-hours fees included?
  • Can you put the quote in writing?

Quote in writing. A clear provider will not mind. If you are unsure which tool fits your clog, ask for the reason behind the choice.

FAQ

Drain Cleaning Services FAQ

Why is my drain backing up even after I plunged it?

The clog is probably past the reach of a plunger, often in the main line. Stop using water, avoid chemical cleaners, and ask a provider about snaking or jetting. Repeat backups also suggest a camera check is worth it.

Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaner?

It is risky. Caustic products can harm older pipes, burn skin and give off fumes if mixed. They also leave dangerous liquid for the provider to work around. Plunging or a hand auger is a safer first try.

How much does it cost to clear a clogged drain?

Simple sink and tub clogs often run about $100 to $300 in the U.S., while main line clearing and jetting cost more. Prices vary by access, clog depth and timing, so ask for a written quote before work starts.
